BALASHOV MYKOLA TIMOFIYOVICH
(19.05.1910–29.05.2001)
Born on May 19, 1910 in the village of Boryatino, Voronezh region (Russian Federation) in the family of a worker. In 1927 he graduated from secondary school, worked as a worker at the Voronezh Machine-Building Plant.
In 1932–1935, after graduating from the Voronezh Zoo-Veterinary Institute, he studied as a post-graduate student at the All-Union Research Institute of Pig Breeding (Poltava). In 1940, he defended his PhD thesis “Mestizatsiya Polissya pigs with boars of the Large White and Berkshire breeds”. 3 From 1935 to 1941, he was a senior researcher and head of the breeding and selection department at the same institute. He served in the active army from 1945 to 1946. After demobilization, he held the position of deputy director (1946–1947), and from 1947 to 1950, he was director of the Poltava Research Institute of Pig Breeding. 3 1950 to 1951 – Deputy Head of the Department of Science and Agricultural Propaganda of the Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine.
In 1951–1960 – Director of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Animal Husbandry of Steppe Regions named after M. F. Ivanov “Askania-Nova”, in 1960–1961 – Participated in the organization of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Physiology and Biochemistry of Farm Animals (Lviv), was its director. In 1962–1970 – Director of the Poltava Research Institute of Pig Breeding (now the Institute of Pig Breeding and Agro-Industrial Production of the NAAS). In 1968, at the Special Council of the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy (Kyiv), he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic: “Theory and Practice of Interbreed Crossbreeding in Pig Breeding”. Since 1971 - Head of the Department of Industrial Pork Production of the Poltava Agricultural Institute, Professor of the Department. He worked as a consultant to the Department of General Animal Husbandry of the Poltava Agricultural Institute.
Of significant scientific and practical interest are the works of M. T. Balashov on animal hybridization, breeding of the wild Przewalski horse at the "Askania-Nova" Institute, and development of breeding methods with the Ukrainian Steppe White, Steppe Piebald, Myrhorod and Large White breeds of pigs in the conditions of southern Ukraine.
M. T. Balashov's scientific activities are related to the improvement of pigs of the Large White and Berkshire breeds, the development of methods of selection and breeding work in pig farming, the selection and selection of genotypes in industrial crossbreeding, in particular by the type of constitution, the influence of the maternal organism on the formation of offspring, methods of intensive use of sows during the combination of lactation and farrowing, etc.
During his work at the Poltava Research Institute of Pig Breeding, M. T. Balashov put a lot of effort and skill into staffing the team of scientists, organizing the experimental base and equipping many of its laboratories, which made it possible to conduct in-depth scientific research and train scientific personnel on issues of selection, genetics, feeding, housing technology, pig physiology, etc.
The scientist proved himself not only as an experienced organizer, but also as a skilled teacher in teaching at the Poltava Agricultural Institute. Professor M. T. Balashov trained 6 candidates and doctors of science, published more than 100 scientific papers on pig breeding problems independently and in co-authorship, including 5 books.
For his fruitful scientific, pedagogical and public activities, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and was awarded the title of Honored Zootechnician of Ukraine. For his participation in the fighting, he was awarded two orders of the Great Patriotic War, the Order of the Red Star and the medal "For Courage".
