Brief information: The monograph covers a wide range of issues related to solving one of the acute problems of modern breeding pig breeding - the preservation of the second domestic breed of pigs of Ukrainian selection - the Myrhorod breed. The critical state in which the local local breed is currently located is also the main problem of preserving biodiversity both in Ukraine and in the world. The publication reveals the stages of the centuries-old breed-forming process over a wide historical period - from the period of folk art to scientific selection. The productivity indicators of the Myrhorod breed of pigs in the country's basic farms are analyzed in retrospect. A strategic action plan has been drawn up for its preservation and restoration. A set of measures for selection and breeding work with a modern gene pool has been formed through a combination of traditional methods of breeding the existing population with a rapid change of generations using individual initial parental forms and related pig breeds in the selection process in order to quickly increase the share of conditional bloodline in the Myrhorod breed using introductory crossing.
The publication is intended for scientists, managers and specialists of enterprises, agricultural formations of all forms of ownership, as well as for teachers, postgraduates and students of specialized faculties of higher and secondary specialized educational institutions.

Recommended for publication by the Scientific Council of the Institute of Pig Breeding and Agro-Industrial Production of the National Academy of Sciences on January 12, 2016 (protocol No. 1).
Brief information: The main stages of selection of the large white breed of pigs, starting from the 60s of the 20th century and up to the present time, are covered. Most of the materials are devoted to the predominant breeding for a limited number of productivity traits, that is, the creation of specialized types of pigs: for maternal qualities (inbred type UVB-1), fattening (intermediate parental inbred type UVB-2) and meat qualities (intermediate parental inbred type UVB -3). The effectiveness of the use of inbred and factory types of a large white breed, as well as the same breed of foreign selection in hybridization systems, is described. The results of evaluation of pigs by pheno- and genotype using the index characteristic of the evaluated animals are given. Much attention is paid to the use of immunogenetic tests in the creation of specialized types of pigs, as well as, to a certain extent, DNA markers.
