Since the establishment of the Institute of Pig Breeding in August 1930, the department (from 1930 to 1988), and later the feeding laboratory (from 1988 to the present) has been and is one of the main scientific units of the Institute of Pig Breeding and the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

Scientific research

PND 30 System of organizational and technological solutions for the adaptation of animals to climate change during the production of livestock products (Climatic-adaptive and organic livestock)

30.02.01.17.P. "Develop a system for diversifying nut farming (Júglans régia - walnut) for the needs of livestock farming", (2021-2025)

PND 31 "Genetic improvement of farm animals, their reproduction and preservation of biodiversity" ("Genetics, preservation and reproduction of bioresources in livestock farming")

31.01.00.08.F. "To study the relationship between the level of nutrient absorption by the pig's body and genetic markers (nutrigenomics)" (2021-2025)

Areas of scientific activity

  • theoretical and practical foundations of rationing and feeding pigs;
  • development of scientific principles for innovative development of the production of environmentally safe feeds for organic and industrial pig farming under the conditions of its modernization and reform;
  • study of modern feed products and development of compound feed formulations to reduce the specific weight of grain components and the cost of feeds;
  • feed correction of the reproductive capacity of boars and sows using feed additives of natural origin;
  • research of physiological and biochemical processes of nutrition in pigs in order to improve the system nutrient rationing;
  • studying the relationship between DNA markers and the feeding behavior of pigs and the efficiency of feed assimilation.

Scientists of the department are developing

  • innovative technologies for the production of compound feeds using by-products and production waste in order to reduce their cost;
  • development and study of feed additives and specialized feeds for pigs of different sex and age groups (prestarters, milk replacers, phytogenics, enzymes, pre- and probiotics, organic acids, sorbents, mineral complexes, etc.);
  • elements of precise feeding of pigs are being developed by involving new areas of science such as bioinformatics, molecular biology, molecular nutrition, nutrigenomics.
